Fashion Week. Not quite as good as Shark Week, but...
I’ve been somewhat following the fashion week nonsense these past several days (and by following, I mean if it shows up in my RSS feed, I’ll probably glance at it). I was especially curious to see J.Crew’s new spring 2012 ready-to-wear line, as I don’t believe they’ve presented at fashion week before. Bring on the preppy-quirk. Photos from Style.com. Miss...

Capybara
UNIT OF MEASURE by Sandra Beasley All can be measured by the standard of the capybara. Everyone is lesser than or greater than the capybara. Everything is taller or shorter than the capybara. Everything is mistaken for a Brazilian dance craze more or less frequently than the capybara. Everyone eats greater or fewer watermelons than the capybara. Everyone eats more or less bark. Everyone barks...

Friday Faves: Wear the Rainbow
I wish all of these were hanging in my closet. I had a dream about those purple pants this week. Not kidding. Red (Monki); Orange (Dusen Dusen); Yellow (Monki); Green (Louche); Blue (Monki); Purple (J.Crew). This weekend while Mr. Husband is in class, I’ll be off to the DC “Fashion Beauty Lifestyle” Expo. I’m hoping for a lipstick consultation and a chance to...

Tim Barber: The Places You Go
I posted one of Tim Barber’s photographs on Friday Faves last week, but couldn’t resist coming back for seconds. These shots from his “Untitled Photographs” set are really moving—they’re varied and spontaneous, and make me miss being more alone and going weird places I’d have to react to without anyone’s influence. That’s a weird thing to miss....

Friday Faves: Smoke Gets in Your Eyes
(1) Carven volcano skirt; (2) “Overthinking” via Pinterest; (3) Fiery Oscar de la Renta lace dress; (4) Untitled photograph by Tim Barber. — Not sure why I’m drawn to the smoky and explosive this week. Let’s just say it’s a metaphor for how much I’m ready for the week to be over, and leave it at that. On a side note, for those blog-readers who...

Art for Walls & Closets
I came across Joanna Baker’s darling blog this morning and knew I had to share. What better way to explore artistic talent than to memorialize your fashion wishlists forever? Though I do hope my Pinterest archives will never disappear, I have to say Baker’s sketches are an even more classy way to get those J.Crew wool mini pants into my house without having to cough up my entire...

Faves from the Week of Natural Disasters
If I told you my city was hit with not only an earthquake this week, but also a hurricane, would it be enough to forgive my lack of posting? If so, thanks. If not, well, it’s my blog and I do what I want. Mr. Husband, dog, and I made it through the week alive, and with access to electricity. I say we’ve come out victorious. Here’s a few things (some of which, like this week, are...

Friday Faves: Jewel Toned
(1) - (2) - (3) - (4) Have a colorful Friday! This week’s been wild, of course. Non-stop work! Non-stop test grading! Car repairs! This weekend I’m planning a little fun-time. Hoping to go to Old Town on Saturday to find a new teaching-appropriate dress…and maybe some seafood. Hoorah!

gesundheit.
Hilarious and terrifying! Woman caught mid-sneeze, 1900. Pinned from Black & WTF. As predicted, Mr. Husband and I felt terrible all weekend. We ate canned chicken soup and watched Teen Mom from Friday night till Sunday night. I didn’t even feel well enough to look at pretty things on the interwebs, so you’re stuck with Madame Sneeze today. Take your vitamins!

Friday Faves
Friday sneaked up on me this week! Between work and teaching and trying to figure out how my gradebook works, I’ve also been fighting off a little cold. Luckily, it’s not seemed like a forever-long week. Some pretty things: (1) Miu Miu fall 2011 sunnies, via The Glitter Guide, (2) Pecos simple leather bracelet, (3) Jill Stuart’s fall 2011 collection, via Moodboard, (4)...

Not Bored
This charming little mash-up from Note to Self makes me think of my mom, who would respond to our whines of “I’m borrrrrred” with either two responses: 1. “Only stupid people get bored, and you’re not stupid.” or 2. “How convenient! I can find some chores for you to do, and then you won’t be bored anymore!” No time to be bored around here....

Friday Faves
Sorry to disappear yesterday! Mr. Husband and I had a rather busy “day off.” Got my first check-up in years, and was poked with more needles than I bargained for. I also had my first day of teaching yesterday, which, despite the poor turn-out (10 out of the 28 students showed up), went fairly smoothly. Here are a few pretty things I’ve had my eye on this week. (1)...

Wednesday Art Break: Camilla Engman
Swedish artist Camilla Engman’s work is an eclectic mix—paintings, illustrations, mixed media, and collections. Above are a few of my favorites. Her paintings are kind of creepy—lots of landlocked boats and faceless, miserable looking people. Her illustrations are a bit quirkier, though, and I love the mixed media piece with the envelopes (it’s called...

Bunnies & Bookstores
I love these sketched home decor items from PATCH NYC. The artwork is by Don Carney. My mom, long-time collector of all things bunny-esque, would love that platter. Of course, the bear is for my couch. Who around here is into whales? (It’s okay to speak up, even though everyone’s gaga for sharks this week!) It’s a busy week around here. Have lots of training (and my first...

Friday Faves + News
Goodbye, July! This has been the fastest summer of all time. Here’s what’s on my radar this week: Lovely lavender bangle from Alkemie Jewelry. To All My Grandmothers, a painting by Kristin Vestgard (via The Jealous Curator). J.Crew’s new Lucienne dress. Classy friend Sarah alerted me to this one—who wants to give me $200 and an occasion? A beehive room, via...

Warm Up, Cool Off
Jeremy Miranda has perhaps become known best for his paintings of icebergs. With the weather being what it is, they caught my eye again the other day, and I knew I had to share a few. I’ve never seen an iceberg. Someday I hope to go on one of those grand Alaskan cruises and see one—and hopefully they’ll be as shadowy and alone as Miranda depicts them. While on Jeremy...

Closed & Opened
I spotted this scarf ages ago and fell in love with it. This was the only photo I’d seen: Last week on Miss Moss’s blog, she tracked down the origin (designers Milleneufcenquatrevingquatre - which means 1984 in French). I was so surprised when I saw the scarf unfolded: Something completely unexpected! Had a decent weekend with the right combination of running around and lying...

Just a few favorites from this week! Nixon The Small Player Watch, ASOS. J.Crew Maisie dress. Eraser iPhone case, Indie Cases via Design Crush. A bear made out of zip ties, d.o.t.s via My Modern Met. Kate Spade idiom Bangle. ASOS color block shopper. Pinecone Bracelet from OldGoldBoutique. — All things considered, it’s been a fairly productive week. We’re...

To Prepare a Face to Meet the Faces that You Meet
A-FACE-A-DAY is an illustration project ten years in the making. Drawn by an Austrian illustrator, these faces present the familiarity and the strangeness of humankind. I love the strange faces, but I love the descriptions even more. I think today mine might say: “DOT ENJOYS MODERN CONVENIENCES. THE AIR CONDITIONER IS HER FAVORITE.” It is so incredibly muggy here today....

Andrew Bush's Vector Portraits: The Public/Private...
There’s a passage in Jess Walter’s The Financial Lives of the Poets where the main character briefly mentions looking into other people’s cars—of course, I don’t have the book with me now, so I’ve lost the way Walter phrased it. But it was something cave-like. Looking through the windows of other people’s lives is like looking in on a small, dark world. I...

Seth Clark - We All Fall Down
Seth Clark’s drawings/paintings of abandoned houses really blow my mind. They’re so spidery and real, with caverns and suspicion in all the right places. When we were kids, my sister Ellie and I used to draw a lot. I drew people (mostly in ballet costumes), but Ellie drew houses. Big Victorian numbers with complicated gables and shutters. Clark’s work is what I imagine Ellie...
